Xmas unwrapping, first impressions

Postby pacc » Sun Dec 25, 2016 8:35 am

Another christmas and some real fx sets unwrapped,
My first impressions.

Seemed to work ok, some enjoyed both assisted
and rc modes some blamed the product...
Bottom line, controls are subjective but buttons based UI will never be good enough,
Explain to me why one button is not enough to send
the AI car around the track for others to chase...

My experience, wooden light nordic elm flooring
and any assisted mode car leaving the track will just turn left forever no matter what direction you want to turn...

( one near disaster, two nobrand an one branded
AA battery in the controller turned into something
hot to touch and the branded battery more spheric
than before, ejected from the balcony...)

So,
a) smartphone controls can get first impressions better,
A button is not grok'ed by everyone, even on the loo.
b) out of track detection could be better.
c) some fun, crashing, drifting enough to make it one of the most valued presents, though mostly by size for now.

Wow, your use of English is... interresting.

> a) smartphone controls can get first impressions better,
Raises the cost of entry for kids but could be an additional option for some.

> Explain to me why one button is not enough to send
It is no big deal to follow the menu system.

> ejected from the balcony...)
Best avoided LOL.

> any assisted mode car leaving the track will just turn left forever no matter what direction you want to turn...
This depends on the infrared reflectivity characteristics of the surface driven on.

Happy new year.

Standard communications would have been really cool for future expansions, hacking and making it possible to sell the cars individually.
Now it might be hackable but it is not clear how much of the "intelligence" lies in the controller vs the car.

The manual, forget to read that. (Inspired by Yoda my English is)
My brother consistently followed the command "choose vehicle.." and failed, he never heard the continued sentence " ... mode"

It would probably have been possible to iron out difficulties because of different surfaces in development,
it does not seem impossible for the fore and aft sensors to be calibrated to aim straight ahead if they have a matching track hue (or flooring)
then following an outer or inner path on the track would have come automatically.
Now we eventually figured out that you need to quickly turn to R/C mode when you leave the track.

My final observation is that in R/C mode the starter set curves are all close to the tightest possible turnrate (given the steeringwheel/car limits)
which makes it less of a sport learning how to manage the car - but I can see that it fits a stick control like the hotwheels has better.
